Head Instructor Joel Barfield has lived in Southwest Virginia for most of his life
and appreciates the values of this area.
He served eight years as a paramedic/firefighter in Roanoke County before changing
careers to become a computer programmer. It was here that a co-worker introduced
him to Universal Kempo Karate.
Initially joining to improve his level of fitness, he quickly gained a great
appreciation for the family atmosphere in the Universal Kempo Karate Schools
Association. He began his training at the Salem Branch under the leadership of
Asst. Chief Instructor Bryan Cochran in February of 2004, earned his Black Belt
in 2007 and was promoted to 2nd Degree Black Belt at the 2010 Aloha Martial Arts Seminar.
Having been recognized as an Outstanding Assistant Instructor at the Salem Branch,
he was given the opportunity to open the Christiansburg Branch in 2008.
Instructor Barfield works hard to pass on the training and values that he has gained
during his time in Universal Kempo Karate. His 2 children also train in Universal Kempo Karate
